If you live or work in Rockaway and you've been thinking about self-defense training, SD4ALL Cedar Knolls is your closest option — 20 minutes door-to-door, Route 46 East to I-287 South to Route 10 West to Route 24 East, Exit 2A. One dedicated Krav Maga studio. Adults only. No trophies.
Rockaway-area adults who want practical Krav Maga in an adults-only studio drive 20 minutes for one reason: this is the closest place that's built for them specifically. No kids classes running in the next room. No sport-team energy. Just adults learning to protect themselves.
The studio is built around one thing: practical Krav Maga self-defense for adults. Adults only. Beginners welcome. The curriculum follows what the data says actually happens in civilian situations — strikes first, then grabs and pushes, then ground survival. Weapons come later, when the fundamentals are in your body, not your head.
What You Actually Train For
Sources: NIJ/CDC Full Report on Violence Against Women · FBI Uniform Crime Reports (Aggravated Assault) — ranked most to least common
The curriculum is built around what the data says happens — not what looks dangerous on YouTube. For women: strikes first, then pushes and grabs. For men: punches first, then being taken to the ground. Weapons are near the bottom of the list for both. The training reflects that.
Striking (~50% of training)
Strikes are the most common physical attacks. You learn to move under a strike, absorb it, and answer back. Most of class time is here.
Grabs, pushes, shoves (~25%)
Second most common. Someone grabbing your arm, your collar, pushing you against a wall, or restraining you from behind. You train the break and the reset.
Ground survival (~25%)
What happens when a push or grab escalates. Getting off the ground when someone bigger is on top of you. Preventing the takedown. Getting back to your feet.
Chokes — when they happen
Less common than the first three, but trained specifically. The response window is short. You drill it until it doesn't require thinking.
Weapons — least common
Covered in the curriculum. Knife and stick workshops run quarterly. Weapons are real — but statistically, they come last, not first.
In a live scenario the response has to come from the body, not the memory. That's the difference between a self-defense seminar and a curriculum you train for months. You drill until it's not something you think about.
Why Rockaway Adults Choose SD4ALL
Krav Maga for adults
The room is full of working adults — beginners and returners, men and women, 25 to 70. Strikes come first because the data says so for both men and women. Then grabs and pushes. Then ground. In a live scenario, the response has to come from the body, not the memory. That's what we build, step by step.
Gonçalo teaches the classes himself
Founder and chief instructor — 16 years on the Portuguese National Team. He left competition to build a system for people who aren't athletes. 600+ adults trained since 2012. He still teaches every class.
Built for women, too
Women's-focused Krav Maga on Friday evenings. ~40% of SD4ALL students are women — the training environment and the scenarios are built for it.
We publish our student data
115 student check-ins tracked. Students training 3x/week: 33% strong progress. Students on the at-home plan: 36% strong vs. 7% without. We don't hide what works. See the Warrior Code.
What Happens in Your First Class
You arrive. There's no belt ceremony, no bowing at the door.
Gonçalo or one of his instructors meets you, asks about any injuries or joint issues, and walks you through the training area. You'll drill 2–3 fundamentals — usually a wrist grab and a choke — with a partner. The pace is yours. If you've trained before, they'll see that and adjust. If you've never thrown a punch in your life, that's fine too. That's exactly who this program was built for.
By the end of the session, you'll have a clear picture of where you are and what the next 3 months should look like. Your first class is free.
