Gonçalo Esteves — Founder & Chief Instructor
Teaching Krav Maga since 1997. Built for adults who want to be genuinely capable — where the only competition is with yourself.
Train With Gonçalo — Free First ClassGonçalo Esteves competed at the top of the sport — a 4th Dan Shotokai, four-time Portuguese National Champion, and sixteen years on the Portuguese National Team. He stepped away from competition when it was simply his time; another path — engineering and consulting — was calling. What pulled him toward Krav Maga was personal: even as a champion, there were individuals he didn't feel he could truly handle on the street. He went looking for real self-defense, half-expecting a movie fight club — and found the opposite: flow, and a system for building genuine capability.
Since 1997 he's taught Krav Maga across four countries — Portugal, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States — roughly 1,500 people in all. In 2016 he founded Self Defense 4 All in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, and built it for working adults, parents, and people well into their 60s and 70s: beginners who want to be genuinely capable. Plenty of them compete — only ever with themselves.
He's also an industrial engineer, and a former Chief Experience Officer at Space Nation with three NASA Challenge Awards. That engineering background shows up in how the studio runs: we measure what we do, we publish our own student progress data, and we don't claim what we can't show.

Good people becoming more capable together
A place where adults get measurably more capable — calm, supportive, and serious about the work. The instruction is, in one student's words, "an environment of intensity but kindness."
Confidence follows capability
Confidence isn't something you talk yourself into. It's what's left over after you've actually drilled a response enough times that your body owns it.
We publish our data
The Warrior Code — 81+ weekly student check-ins — shows that plan commitment predicts progress more than attendance alone. We share what works, including the uncomfortable parts.
It only exists in the room
You learn under real pressure, with a real partner in front of you. Gonçalo tells you what won't work first — then what will.
All ages, all levels
About 40% of students are women. The room runs from complete beginners to seniors in the Silver program. Nobody is the only one of their kind.

About Gonçalo & SD4ALL — Common Questions
- Who teaches the classes at SD4ALL?
- Gonçalo Esteves — founder and chief instructor — teaches most classes himself, supported by a certified instructor team. SD4ALL is an independent, owner-operated studio, not a franchise. When you train here, you're learning from the person whose name is on the door.
- What is Gonçalo's background?
- He's a 4th Dan Shotokai, a 4-time Portuguese National Champion, and spent 16 years on the Portuguese National Team. He has taught Krav Maga since 1997 across Portugal, Norway, the UK, and the US, and has trained roughly 1,500 people over his career. He's also an industrial engineer — which is where the studio's evidence-based, data-tracking approach comes from.
- Is SD4ALL a Krav Maga franchise?
- No. It's independent and owner-operated, founded in Cedar Knolls in 2016. The curriculum, the standards, and the community are built here — not handed down from a national brand.
- Does Gonçalo still teach, or just run the business?
- He still teaches. The single most common thing students mention in reviews is Gonçalo by name — the instruction, the attention, the mid-week check-ins. He moved on from competition when it was his time, and teaching adults to become genuinely capable is the work he kept choosing.
- What's the teaching philosophy?
- "Good people becoming more capable together." Capability before confidence. Evidence before hype. We're honest about what works and what doesn't, we train with real partners under real pressure, and we publish our own student progress data. It's a studio for adults who want to be genuinely capable — where the only competition is with yourself.
